SURVIVAL MARTIAL ARTS

By: Faris Ezwan Ali Khan

Survival martial arts are practical skills and techniques a person can use to protect themselves and stay alive in dangerous situations. The main idea is simple: keep it easy, use little energy, and do only what really work. In the past, these methods were created so that ordinary people, not trained soldiers could defend themselves during times of danger. The techniques were passed down secretly, and many practitioners kept their teachers’ identities hidden.

The Principles
Today, survival martial arts are not just about fighting. They also teach us how people react under extreme pressure, whether physically, mentally, or emotionally. Training usually pushes practitioners to their limits so that they can stay calm and functional in tough situations, whether in the jungle, the mountains, or even an urban environment. The golden rule is: only fight when there’s no other choice. Avoiding conflict is always the first option. But if you have to act, the goal is to stop the threat quickly while keeping yourself safe.

Tools and Techniques
Survival isn’t only about fighting, it’s also about using your environment wisely. Knowing how to find shelter, clean water, food, and even simple medical remedies is part of the training. Paying attention to small details in your surroundings, like animal sounds, bird movements, or changes in the environment can help you sense danger before it reaches you.

When it comes to weapons, survival martial artists don’t rely on fancy equipment. Everyday tools or even random objects can be turned into weapons if needed. A stick, a stone, or even a simple household item can be used for protection. The idea is to be resourceful with whatever is around you.

Daily Tools

Techniques are also practical. Unlike traditional martial arts where moves often start from a fixed stance, survival martial arts allow you to strike or defend from any position even if you’re sitting, lying down, or stuck in a small space.

Beyond fighting, training also covers moving quietly, blending into your surroundings, and avoiding being noticed. Observing people, their habits, body language, or even how they walk can give you an advantage if you ever need to protect yourself.

Training and Approach
The training is designed to build both physical strength and mental toughness. It includes conditioning exercises, realistic practice drills, and scenarios that teach you how to handle stress. Unlike many other martial arts, survival martial arts emphasize escaping, dodging, and moving efficiently instead of relying on brute force.

Defence usually means blocking, dodging, or breaking free, while offense focuses on simple but effective strikes and holds. Instead of rushing in with aggression, practitioners are taught to use calm, flowing movements that conserve energy.

This approach is different from basic self-defence, which is about creating an opening to escape as fast as possible. Survival martial arts prepare you for longer situations, where you might need to stay alert and safe for hours or even days. Breathing exercises play an important role, helping you remain calm and in control when things get stressful.

Mental Strength
One of the deepest lessons in survival martial arts is learning to stay calm by accepting the worst. When you’re no longer ruled by fear, you can think more clearly, make better choices, and act with confidence.

Through practice, students build the ability to stay focused, alert, and level-headed even in the most challenging circumstances.

In short, survival martial arts aren’t about looking cool or showing off. They’re about being prepared, staying safe, and protecting yourself and your loved ones with simple, practical skills when life throws the unexpected at you.
